More About Steiner Ranch

If you’re looking for a master-planned community with lots of natural areas, amenities and very active homeowners associations, moving to Steiner Ranch might be the right choice for you.

Located in Travis County about 20 miles west of Austin, this upscale community is home to about 10,000 people. The 4,600-acre master-planned community has dedicated more than 1,500 acres to wildlife habitats, parks and greenbelts, which can be both a blessing and a curse.

In September 2011, a wild fire destroyed 23 homes and burned about 160 acres at Steiner Ranch. The fire, which occurred during extreme drought conditions, apparently was ignited when slack electrical wires came in contact and flashed during high winds. Molten metal fell onto the dry grass and ignited the fire, according to investigators for the Travis County Fire Marshal’s office.

But, that disaster was probably the exception, not the rule. For the most part, Steiner Ranch residents cherish the well-preserved natural environment and the related enhancements.

Many Steiner Ranch neighborhoods and home sites look out over Texas Hill Country vistas provided by the 819 acres of Steiner Ranch Preserve, part of the larger 27,000-acre Balcones Canyonlands Preserve.  Residents also enjoy more than 20 miles of hike and bike trails and 10 neighborhood parks with play spaces, picnic areas, and outdoor grills.  More than 14 miles of greenbelt around the community ensures a natural wooded setting.

Amenities include the private membership Lake Club on Lake Austin, multiple basketball and lighted tennis courts, four swimming pools, including a year-round heated lap pool, and full-time on-site activities offered by its three community centers.  Steiner Ranch’s 18-hole golf course, designed by Roy Bechtol, is the official home of The University of Texas Golf Teams.  This championship course provides a backdrop for many homes in Steiner Ranch.

Homeowner associations and a private management company keep things running smoothly at Steiner Ranch day-to-day. Austin Energy, owned by the City of Austin, provides electric service to Steiner Ranch. Water service is provided by Water District #17, and natural gas service is provided by Texas Gas Service. Lake Travis Fire Rescue – Steiner Ranch Station and Travis County Sheriff (West Command) provide emergency services. The nearest hospital is Lakeway Regional Medical Center.

Steiner Ranch is located in the Leander Independent School District.  Three elementary schools, Steiner Ranch Elementary, Laura Welch Bush Elementary and River Ridge Elementary, and Canyon Ridge Middle School are all located within Steiner Ranch.  A new high school, Vandegrift High School, is located just minutes from Steiner Ranch.
